Go-Ride Racing 28th April 2012
Click here for photos from the Go Ride Event :
On Saturday 18th August 2012 Salt Ayre Cog Set Youth Cycling Club participated in a national campaign called “Join In Local Sport” to encourage new participants in sport on the back of the success of the London Olympics. Many sports embraced this national campaign and had their own branded events. Cog Set joined in with British Cycling to offer a Go Ride Games Event.
Despite the rain, which could have easily put new people off, spirits were not dampened with 10 new participants joining in this fun, cycling taster session. The day’s activities included an option for riders to experience road racing and or mountain biking. Those choosing the road racing option on Salt Ayre’s closed circuit track, enjoyed a morning of cycling fun and skills development, became more confident about cycling in a group and then enjoyed the thrills of an Italian Pursuit race at the end of the session with four teams of mixed abilities racing to a close finish. The MTB riders challenged themselves to a testing course of obstacles including ramps/chicanes/drop offs and downhill slaloms. After some initial coaching, riders pitched themselves against each other to experience the thrill of MTB racing through the mud and rain.
Both groups of young people consisted of some future young talent and allowed them to experience this ever increasingly popular sport.
Saturday 19th November saw Salt Ayre Cog Set host their 2011 annual Awards night of the year.
With over 100 youngsters, parents, helpers and coaches turning up in their best party gear, it was a great night of celebrations for all those that have made this years racing/coaching another successful year.
Hosted by Cog Set's chair, Mr Jonathan Abra in his resplendent Tuxedo who introduced the proceedings for the night. Alongside Jonathan was special guest speaker Mr Andy Riley commenting upon this years events and who gave a wonderful breakdown of what it is like as a parent experiencing the thrills of cyce racing from the side lines…
Many awards were handed out to youngsters from Special Achievements throughout the year including most spectacular crash to the most aggressive rider. This was followed by club trophy's awarded to those youngsters winning their respective age categories ranging from Under 8 to Under 16's, in the Club Champioinships races held in September.
More than 50 Cog Set cyclists and their families, totalling 90 riders, descended onto Kielder forest in Northumberland on Saturday, October 1 for a weekend of mountain biking and social, staying at Hawkhirst Scout Camp, on the edge of Lake Kielder.
Staying in the heart of purpose made mountain bike areas surrounded by forest, Cog Set riders were spoilt for choice as to where to ride, from gentle family friendly “green” routes around the lake to adrenalin pumping singletrack “blue”, “red” and “black” runs through the forest.
After an early start travelling up from Lancaster on Saturday morning, the coaches split the riders into different ability matched groups for the afternoon’s ride, with a professional cyclist – Lancaster’s own Matt Cronshaw, who rides for team Raleigh – heading out with group five to tackle the most demanding routes.
Sunday dawned overcast with the threat of rain but this didn’t dampen the groups’ enthusiasm for another day’s mountain biking.
After another great ride all thanked the organisers and coaches of Cog Set for all their hard work in arranging the Kielder weekend.

Last Tuesday the Salt Ayre circuit saw the 16th out of 20 races in the Salt Ayre Cycling Association/VanillaBikes.com League 2011 and the final races in the Youth League. After the evenings Youth races the prizes for all the individual youth category’s were presented by Bradley Wiggins assisted by Nev Pearson. As was to be expected, on their home crcuit, riders from the Salt Ayre Cog Set nearly made a clean sweep in all the two year Boys & Girls age group going from 15 & 16 year olds (A category) to those aged eight or under (E Category), the only interloper preventing the clean sweep being Lewis Hartley (Eastlands Velo) in the ‘C Boys’.
Youth Category winners: ‘A Boys/Girls’: James Jackson / Jess Atkinson; ‘B Boys/Girls’: John Didsbury / Bethan Abra; ‘C Boys/Girls’: Lewis Hartley (Eastlands Velo) / Megan Abra; ‘D Boys/Girls’: Bobby Horton / Amy Monkhouse; ‘E Boys/Girls’: Adam Hodgson / Aimee Hodgson;

COG SET MTB WEEKEND AT KIELDER - OCTOBER 2010
More photos to follow….
Ninety two filthy-dirty, soaking wet members of Salt Ayre Cog Set, family and friends grinned broadly as they recounted tales of the fourth Cog Set mountain biking weekend away. This year’s trip was last weekend and the venue was Kielder Forest; the first time the club had ventured beyond the Lake District.
In early autumn sunshine on Saturday morning the group assembled at the Hawkhirst outdoor education centre. After a short briefing, each of the riders was assigned to one of five groups and at 11:30 all set out on pre-arranged routes through the spectacular Northumbrian landscape. Groups 1 to 3 hit the ‘red routes’ on the west of Kielder Water and covered challenging climbs, technical descents and jaw-dropping board-walks across the peat-bog section at the top of the moor. Here, at least one coach and group leader mis-judged a corner and pitched head-first into the peat to much amusement. Group 1, the ‘fast lads’, really stretched their legs (and lungs) and completed the Lonesome Pine trail twice, whereas groups 2 and 3 contented themselves with one circuit, a stop for cream teas at Kielder Castle and a play in the skills area before cruising back to base along the lake shore.
Groups 4 and 5 also headed for the tea-shop but via the less challenging terrain of fire-tracks through the forest. Demonstrating the breadth of experience in the party, these groups included younger riders on mountain bikes and even a few on trailer-bikes behind Mums and Dads. A lot of riders tackled technical sections they might have thought were beyond their capabilities, rode with people they didn’t know well and made new friends – adding a new dimension to their Cog-Set experience. After cakes baked by club members and a meal in the centre’s dining room everyone hit the sack and woke on Sunday to heavy rain. Undaunted and fortified with hearty breakfasts, the groups set out again for shorter (3-hour) rides, returning in time to hose off the bikes, shower and lunch before the long journey home.
The club would like to thank the Youth and Community Services team at Lancashire County Council for allowing it to borrow from their stock of mountain bikes, which meant that no-one was excluded from taking part in this wonderful experience.
