Time Trials Sponsorship

We are pleased to announce Leisure Lakes Bikes are sponsoring the Thursday evening time trials this summer. The prizes are vouchers to be spent in their shop, at the top of Penny Street in Lancaster, and they are to be awarded as shown in the tables below. The reason there are two tables is that there will be two presentations, one mid-season and one at the end. Depending on the weather we are also planning a mid-summer BBQ at the TT Presentation on 20th June.

In the first, on 20th June, there are prizes for fastest and second fastest over each of the three distances.

There is also a unique prize for Best Gauged at each distance - which means the ride that produces the most consistent lap times - but it must be one in which you are trying a good, fast time. This prize highlights the time-triallist’s ability to judge and maintain a steady effort.

Awards at the end of the season are similar but with extra prizes for those who improve the most between the first and second half of the season.

And finally… the best time for 10 miles round Salt Ayre is 20.52. In 2013, the fastest ride of year wins an extra £200 - if it is below 20 mins.

Big Changes to Cog Set Sessions - Starting 30 March 2013

Because the club has grown so much we had problems fitting everyone in on some Saturdays last year so we have also made a change to the way we do Cog Set. From now on we will have two coached sessions each week. This will free up some track space and means that groups training on Saturdays will have more space and the opportunity to do more than they have before.

If you are a BC Category E, D or C rider (under 8, 10 or 12) keep coming on a Saturday morning, same time, same place. We will have coaching and races just like before but now we will have more track to use and fewer riders to each coach so Cog Set will get even better - if you can imagine that!

Anyone who is a Category A or B rider (under 14, Under 16) or Junior (under 18) and attended the recent pre-season residential weekend will be in the Monday evening session (18:30 start) from now on (starting 1st April). Riders in categories A, B and Junior that didn’t attend the residential will start in the Saturday morning sessions with a view to quickly moving to Mondays as coaches assess their ability and attitude to racing. The Academy group (which will meet on Mondays) will be dedicated to race training. For those A/B/Juniors that are not interested in racing we will also have the option to come on Saturdays and enjoy activities aimed at the non-competitive cyclist. We hope to offer some more led-rides this year but we do have a limited number of coaches and ride leaders so bear with us on that.

Don’t forget the other two activities each week – circuit races for all categories on Wednesday and Time Trials on Thursday.)

Each rider will have a record of the skills that they have developed and this will be used by the coaches to help them help each rider to progress as they should and work on the bits they might not do so well yet. Once a rider has completed all the skills for a level they will be invited by the coaches to move up a group. Moving groups isn’t compulsory but we do want to see people improving and developing. It’s a lot to remember but we will put all the information in separate documents so that it is absolutely clear who is doing what.

Winter Family Rides

During the winter months we will have family rides out on the following dates :

24th November 2012 / 22nd December 2012 / 19th January 2013 POSTPONED UNTIL 26TH JANUARY / 16th February 2013 / 16th March 2013

Please note under 12’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Please remember to wear appropriate clothing for the time of year, including your hi-viz vest, waterproofs, gloves, bring spare inner tube, drink & snack. We will be stopping for a lunch break, so please remember to bring some money for your lunch, before heading back around 1pm. Depending on numbers we may split into 2 ability groups and head on different routes.

Rides will take place on the following dates, but please remember to check the website the night before for any changes/cancellations (please arrive by 9.45 to sort out groups etc.)

Sat 15th September 2012 - Club Championships and BBQ

Download Club Championship Results - 2012
Cog Setters Under 8, 10 and 12 could choose between road/track racing and mountain biking. Results have been split between boys/girls for each event, with medals presented for first, second and third in each event.

Trophies will be awarded at our 'Club Champs Awards Evening' (date/venue to be arranged).

Saturday 18th August Cog Set Open Event

Learn essential cycling skills and techniques from qualified coaches and take part in some racing against other riders who are also new to the sport.

The event will be a fun cycling skills session to welcome new participants to our club setting (6-18 years of age). Some fun competitions will be thrown in for good measure. All shapes and sizes of bikes welcome. Not owning a bike is not be a barrier as club bikes will be available for new participants to try. Refreshments will be provided.
Cost: free to new participants
Time: 09:30 registration; activities 10:00 - 12:00.

12.30 - 21st July - British Schools Cycling Association 2012 National Time Trial Championships.

In the afternoon, after normal Cog Set session
This is a slightly unusual competition because you compete in the name OF YOUR SCHOOL (not Cog Set). I know from the organiser that so far there have not been many entries. This is a really good chance to become a NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPION in your age group.
The club would encourage anyone who wants to have a go and it would be great if the record books of the future showed some national champions from Lancaster and Morecambe (or Kendal or Bentham…)
The age groups are slightly different so that they line up with school years. The categories, distances and entry form can be found at http://www.bsca.org.uk

Sat 14th July - Olympic Themed Event

The event will consist of 3 races in one which will combine to provide an overall result. Each participant will do a 400m sprint (cycle) on the athletics track, a 2mile time trial on the cycling track and then a road race to finish (4-12km approxiamtely depending on age groups).
Registration will be at 09:30 so that we can have a briefing to explain the logistics of the event and start racing at 10:00. We should be finished by about 12:30.
Goodie bags will be provided to everyone and some prizes will be awarded on the day (not just for the winners).

As a Go Ride Club we are expected to host two Go Ride Racing events each year. The Olympic Torch Weekend event will be advertised and promoted as a Go Ride Racing event such that new participants can be attracted to the sport/club on the back of wider work that the City Council is doing to promote sport more generally. However British Cycling's 'rules' on 'new' participants for Go Ride Racing events often tie us in knots and often lead to some of our own riders feeling left out.
Therefore in order to be inclusive we will have two basic categories of riders: 'novices' [who will be riders 'new' to racing/time trialing] and 'competent racers' [those who already compete in racing or time trialing].

'Novice' riders will compete in the Go Ride Racing event and will consist of any participants completely new to the club and will also encompass any riders who have either not got a British Cycling Racing Licence or those club members who have a Racing Licence as part of an inclusive British Cycling membership deal but who clearly have little or no racing or time trialing experience. A list has been produced for clarity.
'Compentant racers' will fairly obviously be defined as those people who race and time trial regularly and they will compete in their own category.
The 'novice' and 'compentent' racer categories will then be sub-divided by age (U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16) and by gender (boys and girls) to try to make the competition as fair as possible.
If I have completely confused you please either email me, call me (01524 37741 or 07779 158392) or see me on Saturday.

Saturday 19th May - Youth Races - registration at 12noon

The Cog Set session will be on as normal next Saturday: 09:30 registration for the session 10:00 - 12:00 (prompt finish). This is in recognition that not everyone is motivated by competition and not everyone wants to race.

However in the afternoon the club will be hosting a British Cycling sanctioned Youth Racing event (BC points available). Signing on and Gear Checking will start from 12:00 with racing starting at 13:00. See website for full details: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/76590/Salt-Ayre-Youth-Races
We have been guaranteed a £10 voucher from Leisure Lakes Cycles for the winners of each age category (boys and girls).

Youth and Junior female exclusive race coaching in the North West

The two race coaching Go-Ride clusters based in Lancashire and Cumbria have come together to form a super cluster with aim of promoting a series of race orientated coaching sessions for young North West female riders.

The active coaches in the two cluster have said: “We will be organising a series of three cluster “girls only” sessions throughout the months of April, May and June.

“With consideration, we will be planning these sessions to encourage more girls to experience competitive cycling in a friendly and encouraging environment. These sessions will provide an opportunity for girls to learn from each other as well as experienced female coaches. It is expected that by the end of these sessions, riders will take away a renewed level of confidence in their racing and to have developed techniques which they can hold onto and transfer into the racing arena.”

Who are they for?
These sessions have been organised for second year youth C and above, up to junior girls. Early booking is advisable as we anticipate this to be a popular event.

Online entry is open now - click the links below.
